The genesis of Pool, according to co-founder Maxime Junique, stemmed from a shared frustration with his co-founder, Piet Terheyden. Junique noted the unconscious nature of this habit, which they discovered was prevalent among their peers as well, extending to design inspirations and various forms of saved visual content.
From Shelved Idea to AI Renaissance
Pool was initially conceived as the inaugural project by Spinoff Studio, the founders’ product and design venture, approximately three years prior. The initial development phase in Lisbon spanned a couple of weeks, during which the founders worked from a van to create the landing page, website, and the foundational application. However, recognizing the immediate need for revenue-generating products, they temporarily pivoted towards B2B SaaS solutions, placing Pool on hold.
Spinoff Studio subsequently developed other products, including the CRM software Waitless, which achieved acquisition last year. The resurgence of Pool was catalyzed by the significant advancements in AI technology, making the core concept of organizing personal, unstructured data more viable.
Junique articulated that the current AI landscape presented an opportune moment to revisit their initial vision. He highlighted Pool’s potential to tap into a novel and underexplored dataset for AI applications, contrasting it with the more common focus on transactional data like emails, bank transactions, and chat logs. Pool aims to engage with the deeply personal and emotional dataset inherent in users’ saved visual content.
Dynamic Content Management and Future Expansion
Pool treats screenshots as dynamic memories, meaning their relevance can fluctuate over time. For instance, a screenshot of an event ticket barcode would naturally lose relevance post-event. Conversely, a flyer for an upcoming event could be processed by Pool’s AI agents to identify ticket purchase options and link to relevant ticketing platforms.
Users can retrieve information within Pool through direct search queries or by interacting with its integrated AI assistant.
Looking ahead, the founders intend to expand this concept into a more comprehensive personal assistant application. The visual motif of Pool, featuring a rubber duck that initiates the app’s launch sequence, is slated to be integrated into the branding for this future AI-driven agent.
Currently based in Lisbon, the founders were planning a trip to San Francisco in late May for investor meetings.
