As the narrative of the acclaimed series “Hacks” reached its zenith, the transformation of a potential casino into a bespoke venue presented a compelling canvas for design. The choice between a minimalist, modern aesthetic or a flamboyant embrace of Las Vegas’s theatrical heritage was paramount. The opportunity to infuse the space with elements reflecting both Marcus’s sophisticated sensibilities and the region’s distinctive spirit of extravagant charm was immense.

The Art Deco Influence
With Deborah Vance’s powerful persona at the helm, the design direction coalesced into a resplendent Art Deco theme. This stylistic choice is a perfect echo of Deborah’s own character – audacious, commanding, and undeniably chic. This signature aesthetic has consistently defined key elements of the series, from the elaborate set of “Late Night with Deborah Vance” to her personal tour bus and private dressing quarters.
“Art Deco possesses a captivating femininity, yet maintains a strong, assertive presence without being overly delicate,” explains Jennifer Lukehart, the show’s set decorator. “It offers a timeless allure that harmonizes with the grandeur of old Hollywood. Furthermore, many of its distinctive shapes and motifs have experienced a resurgence in contemporary popularity, mirroring Deborah’s own enduring appeal.”
Exterior Grandeur and Theatrical Touches
The initial reveal of “The Diva” casino, captured against the iconic backdrop of the Plaza Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, immediately evokes the mid-century glamour of establishments like the Stardust and the Sahara. The exterior signage, meticulously crafted to replicate the hand-drawn artistry of 1950s neon, speaks to a bygone era of bespoke craftsmanship. “The unique, handmade quality of those original logos is what truly made them iconic; they were never mere fonts but artistic expressions,” notes production designer Rob Tokarz.
While the ambitious plan for a monumental statue of Deborah was set aside, Marcus’s tribute materialized in the renaming of the casino’s theater to the “Deborah Vance Comedy Club,” a poignant nod replacing the agreed-upon “Kitten Heel Club.” The theater itself, meticulously recreated within the Plaza’s existing space, featured opulent gold-upholstered walls and a striking Austrian curtain crafted from gold lame, a detail that Tokarz had long aspired to incorporate.
Interior Opulence and Bespoke Details
The ceremonial ribbon-cutting scene, set against a backdrop of heightened Art Deco splendor, showcases geometric chandeliers and a sophisticated chevron motif adorning the mezzanine. The stage, framed by elegant arches, was prepared for the occasion. The location, the Cicada Restaurant and Lounge in Los Angeles, provided a fittingly dramatic setting, enhanced by custom design elements. Among these were bespoke gaming tables featuring distinctive pink surfaces. Adding a vibrant touch of retro glamour, two larger-than-life neon showgirl figures, sourced from a specialized prop rental company, flank the space.
The ultimate highlight, however, is the subtle yet significant inclusion of original showgirl sketches by the legendary Bob Mackie. These exquisite drawings, discovered by Lukehart during research for a Carol Burnett costume, were originally intended for a casino project that never materialized. Mackie generously provided the sketches, which were subsequently enlarged and illuminated as lightboxes, gracing the walls on either side of the audience.
“Bob Mackie was incredibly gracious and supportive, allowing us to feature his sketches,” Lukehart adds. “While I was exploring his designs, I discovered these remarkable showgirl illustrations. They were created for a casino project that, unfortunately, never came to fruition. He promptly overnighted the sketches to us, and we transformed them into impressive lightboxes that punctuate the space.” A green screen at the rear cleverly extends the perceived depth of the venue, hinting at a larger casino floor beyond. This design masterfully encapsulates a vision of luxury and entertainment, leaving the audience wishing for a deeper exploration of “The Diva’s” full potential.
Business Style Takeaway: The Art Deco design of “The Diva” seamlessly blends historical opulence with modern sophistication, creating an environment that speaks to ambition and refined taste. This approach to interior design not only enhances the narrative of luxury and success but also projects an image of curated elegance, reinforcing the personal brand of its influential protagonists.
