In a distinguished Houston residence, a whimsical touch has been introduced, subtly transforming its inherent grandeur. The homeowner’s affection for nature, and specifically squirrels, became a delightful muse for designer Virginia Tupker.
A Nod to Heritage with a Playful Spirit
Nestled in the affluent River Oaks neighborhood, the property itself boasts architectural pedigree, originally designed by Birdsall P. Briscoe in the late 1930s. Briscoe was instrumental in shaping Houston’s transition into a city of considerable opulence. While the home’s traditional architecture could lean towards formality, Tupker masterfully injected elements of surprise and personality.

The powder room vestibule now features a captivating arrangement of antique Audubon prints, thoughtfully curated with art consultant Illa Gaunt. These prints depict woodland creatures, with squirrels prominently featured, transforming the space into an unexpected, charming sanctuary.

Curated Comforts and Bespoke Spaces
Tupker’s design philosophy emphasizes a sophisticated yet playful approach, seamlessly blending historical context with contemporary desires. This is evident in the creation of a private bar, reminiscent of London’s exclusive 5 Hertford Street, enveloped in Russian cotton and illuminated by a striking Soane Britain lantern. A dedicated telephone closet, designed with inspiration from Diana Vreeland’s iconic “Garden in Hell” room, caters to the client’s desire for a landline’s charm. Furthermore, an opulent beauty salon, echoing the old-world allure of Italian retreats, provides a personal haven.
Further enhancing the home’s historic charm, Tupker collaborated with Alexia Leleu of the esteemed French firm Leleu to commission bespoke tapestried furniture, drawing inspiration from 1930s and ’40s designs. These custom pieces, including sofas, took nearly a year to develop, a testament to the dedication to authentic craftsmanship.

Architectural Flourishes and Natural Elements
Working in tandem with architect Roger M. Cooner, Tupker thoughtfully enhanced the residence’s existing architectural details, honoring Birdsall P. Briscoe’s original vision. The octagonal foyer now features intricate plaster relief details, radiating from a central medallion and complemented by an antique Parisian light fixture, imbuing the space with profound atmosphere. In the study, new plaster ceiling details draw the eye upward, providing a sophisticated backdrop for classic furnishings and a Moroccan carpet.

The theme of nature is woven throughout the residence, from an oak-leaf motif chandelier in the main hall to delicate vines adorning the staircase. Even the closet doors in the dressing room feature custom embroidery of blooming flowers and climbing vines, a subtle yet continuous homage to the natural world.
Balancing the organic elements are refined details, such as the hand-painted strié and stripes in the formal entrance hall, providing a classic counterpoint to the vibrant floral runner. In the living room, a striking plaster relief wall, designed in a diamond pattern, serves as a sophisticated backdrop for a dramatic pygmy date palm, installed with considerable effort to emulate the presence of a mature tree.
The residence has evolved into a dynamic setting that fosters both playful interaction and serene enjoyment. The telephone booth becomes a hub for youthful escapades, while the beauty salon offers a glamorous space for pre-event preparations. This home seamlessly blends architectural gravitas with whimsical charm, creating an environment that is both sophisticated and deeply personal.
Business Style Takeaway: This project exemplifies how integrating bespoke design elements and unexpected thematic details can elevate a residence into a truly captivating and personalized luxury environment. Such thoughtful curation reflects a homeowner’s unique personality and enhances their personal brand through distinctive architectural statements.
