A devoted fan, who first encountered the iconic band Take That in the intimate setting of a school gymnasium back in 1992, is set to experience their much-anticipated ‘Circus’ tour once more.
Melanie Parker was merely 12 years old when she attended the band’s early performance at Bay House School in Gosport, a memorable evening that cost just £7.
More than three decades later, having relocated to New York, Parker has returned to the UK’s south coast and will be among the thousands gathered at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton for the tour’s opening.
In parallel, a couple from Gosport, whose engagement was famously sealed at a Gary Barlow concert, are planning to join the tour later in the summer, even though they will miss the opening night due to the bride-to-be’s hen party celebrations.
Melanie ParkerParker’s initial encounter with the band at Bay House School was an intimate affair, small enough for fans to meet the members afterwards.
“That night cemented my obsession,” she recalled. “I knew of them and liked their songs, but yes, that night made it definitive.”
Melanie ParkerParker, who relocated to New York in 2024, timed her return to the south coast to coincide with a family wedding, extending her stay to attend Friday’s concert.
She reminisced about attending the original ‘Circus’ tour at Wembley Stadium.
“It’s very special,” she commented. “There’s a lot going on. There’s always something to see – it really is not to be missed.”
Melanie ParkerAlso eagerly anticipating the band’s return are Zoey Hall and Matthew White from Gosport, whose relationship has strong ties to Take That’s music.
Matthew chose a Gary Barlow concert in Bournemouth in 2018 as the setting for his proposal to Zoey.
He concealed an engagement ring in his sock for much of the evening before proposing as her favourite song began to play.
“It was my dream proposal,” Zoey shared, “but I didn’t think he would ever do it like that.”
The couple, who met approximately 12 years ago while working at a McDonald’s in Fareham, are set to marry on June 27th, with their wedding plans reflecting their deep affection for the band.
Zoey will walk down the aisle to “Rule the World,” the first dance will feature a Gary Barlow song, and each reception table will be named after a Take That track.
Matthew wryly noted, “I haven’t had much say in the table names, let’s just put it that way.”
Zoey HallThe reason for their absence from the opening night is that Zoey’s hen do is scheduled for this weekend in Cardiff.
The couple plans to catch the tour later in the summer in Coventry and Cardiff.
For Zoey, attending the concert will represent a full-circle moment, as her very first Take That experience was during the original ‘Circus’ tour in 2009.
