Actress and activist Marsai Martin acted as a host for the public gathering, engaging with attendees. Myana Zhané, coordinator for Sisters in Cinema, a Chicago-based nonprofit supporting emerging Black women and gender nonconforming media makers, shared her emotional experience visiting the center. She described the profound impact of Obama’s presidency and the center’s ability to inspire hope.
The day’s program featured performances by The Roots, Jennifer Hudson singing the National Anthem and “The Impossible Dream,” and Christina Aguilera performing “What a Wonderful World.” Eddie Vedder and members of the nonprofit Guitars Over সহযোগ performed an original song. John Legend sang “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” later joined by Common and the United Voices of Chicago choir for “Glory.”
Michelle Obama delivered a touching tribute to her husband, highlighting his accomplishments and the pride he inspired. Barack Obama, in turn, playfully remarked on his wife’s speech. Musical performances continued with Marc Anthony, Nigerian singer Hems, and Bono and The Edge of U2.
