Getty ImagesItalian officials have cancelled planned concerts by artists Kanye West and Travis Scott in Reggio Emilia, citing concerns for public order and security. The decision, announced by Prefect Salvatore Angieri, follows a request from the local Jewish community to halt West’s scheduled July performance.
The community’s representative, Nicoletta Uzzielli, had advocated for the show to be replaced with an event that would champion “music back to the forefront as a universally unifying force.”
West, now known as Ye, has faced widespread condemnation for a series of antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi statements, which previously led to his exclusion from the UK. His scheduled appearance was part of a larger event featuring Scott and other artists including The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora, and Swedish House Mafia.
The regional prefecture indicated that a confluence of factors influenced their decision. These included “the cancellation of previous concerts by the American rapper in other countries and the real risk of counter-demonstrations.” The proximity of the scheduled performances on July 17 and 18 at Reggio Emilia’s RFC Arena, along with the anticipated large crowds, were also significant considerations.
Travis Scott himself has been under intense scrutiny since the 2021 Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, where a crowd surge resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals, aged between nine and 27, and injured thousands more.
This summer’s Wireless Festival in London also faced cancellation after West, who was slated to headline, was denied entry into the UK due to the backlash over his past remarks. This incident echoed earlier postponements and cancellations of his international tour dates.
West’s controversial remarks have included a 2022 social media post stating he would go “death con 3 On Jewish people,” and the release of a song titled “Heil Hitler” accompanied by merchandise featuring swastikas in May of the previous year.
Following his exclusion from the UK, a series of other events were affected. The Marseille leg of his tour was postponed indefinitely on April 15, with French media reporting that the Interior Minister had considered banning the June 11 performance. Similarly, his June 19 concert at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, was cancelled for “formal and legal reasons,” as stated by the venue in April.
The artist has been attempting a return to public visibility, issuing a statement in January to The Wall Street Journal in which he apologised for his actions. “I am not a Nazi or an antisemitic,” he declared. “I love Jewish people.” He further attributed his past behaviour to losing “touch with reality” due to his bipolar disorder.
