Rik Mayall's hometown of Droitwich Spa is host its second festival in his honour

The second Rik Mayall Comedy Festival is currently underway, featuring a lineup of comedians set to entertain audiences in the hometown of the late, iconic performer.

For nine days, Droitwich Spa is celebrating the life and enduring legacy of Rik Mayall, with the festival’s core activities centered at the Norbury Theatre. This venue holds particular significance, as it was here that Mayall first took to the stage as a young performer. However, the festivities extend far beyond, encompassing over 300 events spread across various pubs, cafés, streets, and venues throughout the Worcestershire town, including comedy performances, film screenings, musical acts, exhibitions, and workshops.

Running until June 6th, the festival boasts appearances from notable names, including Mayall’s collaborators from “The Young Ones,” Alexei Sayle and Nigel Planer, alongside contemporary talents such as Harriet Kemsley and Richard Herring.

Reflecting on the success of the inaugural event, Mayall’s family expressed their gratitude: “We were truly touched by the sheer amount of love for Rik displayed all over the town. To see him in almost every shop window was at once familiar, funny, and magical. The whole festival truly captured those three things; creating a space where fans of laughter – and Rik, obviously – feel at home. We cannot wait for the fun to arrive back home to Droitwich Spa again this year.”

Day One Highlights and Schedule

Friday’s events commence in the afternoon, with key performances including:

  • Phil Ellis performing “Bath Mat” at Norbury Theatre, starting at 19:00 BST.
  • Mitch Benn at Norbury Theatre, beginning at 21:00 BST.

Throughout the day, attendees can also explore fringe events and exhibitions, such as the “Mayall Trail” and various pop-up museum installations.

While the festival officially kicks off on a Friday, the formal launch ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 11:00 BST. This opening will be officiated by the chairman of Wychavon District Council and the mayor of Droitwich Spa, and will feature a live performance by Mitch Benn.
