Kimera Automobili has officially entered the hypercar fray with the unveiling of its K39, the most ambitious project yet from the Piedmont-based marque founded by Luca Betti. Debuting at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the K39 signifies a major evolution for a company previously celebrated for its modern interpretations of iconic 1980s Lancia rally cars like the EVO37 and EVO38.
This latest creation, however, eschews restomod sensibilities for a completely original, clean-sheet design. The K39 is meticulously engineered to carve out a niche among the world’s most exclusive hypercars.
Design Echoes of Endurance Racing
The Kimera K39’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in the dramatic silhouettes that defined the World Sportscar Championship in the 1980s. It presents a long, low, and sculpted form, offering proportions that deliberately diverge from contemporary automotive trends. While maintaining a clear visual lineage to its predecessors, the K39 takes a more extreme and refined approach.
Aerodynamics are seamlessly integrated into the styling. The front fascia incorporates advanced motorsport-derived solutions, such as an S-duct for sophisticated airflow management. The rear blends efficient air extraction with a prominent wing, evoking the spirit of legendary endurance racers. Even the lighting elements are thoughtfully integrated into the car’s aerodynamic architecture.
Complementing the standard configuration, Kimera Automobili also showcased a dedicated “Pikes Peak” variant. This version amplifies the hypercar’s connection to extreme hillclimb competition with specialized aerodynamic enhancements and a track-focused setup, all while maintaining road legality.
Koenigsegg V8: A Near-1000HP Powerhouse
The K39’s technical heart is undeniably its engine. Kimera has forged a significant partnership with Koenigsegg, the renowned Swedish manufacturer of ultra-high-performance vehicles, to develop a bespoke twin-turbocharged V8. This formidable powerplant delivers an impressive 972 horsepower at 7,350 rpm and 885 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm, with its redline set at a commanding 8,250 rpm.
Kimera emphasizes that this V8 has been specifically tuned for the K39’s unique character. Relative to its application in more extreme Koenigsegg models, the forced-induction system has been optimized for enhanced throttle response and overall drivability. The engine also meets stringent emissions standards and benefits from Koenigsegg’s cloud-based platform for over-the-air software updates.
Further bolstering the project’s engineering credentials, Dallara, the esteemed Italian specialist in competition car development, is engaged in a technical consulting and shared development role. The collective objective is to create a hypercar that masterfully blends exhilarating performance with a lean weight and an engaging, analog driving experience.
An Exclusive Offering
In keeping with the Kimera ethos, the K39 will be produced in strictly limited numbers. Even prior to its official debut, over 20 examples had already been reserved by discerning clientele. The initial 10 purchasers will also receive the exclusive Pikes Peak configuration.
Following its unveiling at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the K39 is set for an international tour, with appearances scheduled at notable events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Monterey Car Week, Spa-Francorchamps, and the Le Mans Classic. At Le Mans, Luca Betti himself will pilot a historic car that served as an inspiration for the K39, creating a poignant symbolic link between automotive heritage and the future.
With the K39, Kimera Automobili is strategically transitioning from its acclaimed role as a purveyor of nostalgic motorsport tributes to establishing its own distinct identity within the contemporary supercar landscape. This ambitious endeavor is significantly underscored by the prestigious collaboration with Koenigsegg and its high-profile debut at one of the world’s most esteemed automotive gatherings.
Business Style Takeaway: The Kimera K39 represents a significant convergence of heritage-inspired design and cutting-edge powertrain technology, catering to a discerning clientele that values exclusivity and extreme performance. This launch signals a strategic move for boutique manufacturers to capture a segment of the luxury market seeking unique, driver-focused hypercars that blend historical reverence with contemporary engineering prowess.
