“My goal was to replicate that specific instant when those walking by are overtaken by rainfall,” said Sergio García Sánchez, the artist based in Spain, discussing his Central Park cover illustration for the November 10, 2025, publication. García Sánchez has been greatly influenced across time by Japanese ukiyo-e artwork, and for this piece, he referenced Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake,” created in 1857, which became part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection in 1918. Hiroshige’s striking arrangement, which juxtaposes the natural world against human creation, evokes a feeling of motion and immediacy, and sends a thrill through the observer—a sensation García Sánchez also aimed to evoke.
