Ryne Sandberg left a significant legacy in Major League Baseball. The late Baseball Hall of Famer and former Chicago Cubs second baseman passed away on July 28, 2025, at just 65 years old. Sandberg's family announced his passing in a statement posted on his Instagram page.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Ryan passed away last night in the comfort of his home,” the Sandberg family confirmed. “Ryan was surrounded by his loving wife Margaret, children and grandchildren. We thank you for all the kind words, support and love during this difficult time. Ryan will forever be in our hearts.”

Ryne Sandberg's Health: What Type of Cancer Did He Have?
Sandberg had been battling metastatic prostate cancer, revealing his diagnosis in January 2024 via an Instagram post.
“My Chicago Cubs, members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the extended baseball family, the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I have some personal news to share with you,” Sandberg's caption read. “Last week, I was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer.”
Sandberg noted that he has “begun treatment and is surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical team and our dear friends.”
“We're going to continue to be positive, stay strong and fight to win,” the former Phillies manager concluded. “Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”
However, a few months later, Sandberg announced that he was completely cancer-free, but it was short-lived. In December 2024, he revealed that the cancer had recurred and spread to other organs.
