Sha’Carrie Richardson was thrust into the spotlight in August 2025 when she was arrested on charges of assaulting her partner, Christian Coleman , according to multiple reports. The Olympic sprinter was detained by police at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington state after a TSA worker reported a woman assaulting a man, according to TMZ. Sha’Carrie was released shortly after.

This wasn’t the first time Sh’Karry had attracted public attention. Four years ago, she missed the 2020 Summer Olympics after testing positive for THC metabolites (recent cannabis use). As a result, she accepted a month-long suspension and would have qualified for the women’s 4 x 100m relay in August 2021, but was not selected.

“While USATF fully agrees that the World Anti-Doping Agency’s THC rules require revision, if USATF were to change its policy post-competition, just weeks before the Olympic Games, it would undermine the integrity of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials,” the organization said in a statement provided to USA Today. “All USATF athletes are equally aware of and bound by the current anti-doping code, and our credibility as the national governing body would be undermined if the rules were only applied in certain situations.”

After the news broke, Sha’Carrie said she wasn’t too upset. “Honestly, I wasn’t upset about it because me and my team were realistic, so we kind of assumed that was what they were going to say,” she told TMZ at the time. “I understand the situation. So I’m embracing it and just knowing what I need to do to move my career forward.”
