Autistic Creator’s Vision Captures Global Entrepreneur’s Attention, Redefining Artistic Valor

An autistic artist from Worcestershire was left “speechless” after discovering that Sir Richard Branson had acquired one of his paintings.

The founder of the Virgin Group, who has been candid about his own struggles with dyslexia, purchased a piece from Rhys Caldwell-Clarkson, a Malvern-based artist, after being deeply moved by his work.

Diagnosed with autism at the age of eight, Caldwell-Clarkson shared with the BBC that he established his new venture, Art on the Spectrum, as a response to the overwhelming nature of his previous retail employment.

Sir Richard acquired one of Caldwell-Clarkson’s artworks shortly after the BBC first featured the artist’s story. The entrepreneur lauded the artist’s creations and congratulated him on the launch of his platform.

Rhys Caldwell-Clarkson said finding out Sir Richard Branson purchased one of his paintings had been a huge encouragement

In a personal video message extended to Caldwell-Clarkson, Sir Richard expressed his admiration: “I love your creativity and landscape paintings. I’m lucky enough to live by the sea and that’s what keeps me calm. Your paintings are the most beautiful, calm things I’ve ever seen. So keep painting, keep dreaming and showing the world just what you can do.”

The artist recounted that relinquishing his retail role was the catalyst for discovering his passion for art. He then began creating pieces inspired by the natural beauty of the Worcestershire countryside.

Rhys Caldwell-Clarkson was surprised with Sir Richard’s video message by BBC Hereford and Worcester.

He reacted with astonishment: “[It’s] absolutely incredible. My heart is in my mouth at the moment. Wow. I don’t know what to say.”

Caldwell-Clarkson noted that Sir Richard’s acquisition of his artwork has provided significant motivation to continue his artistic journey.

The purchased painting is slated for display in one of the Virgin offices.
