Ipupa, who launched his illustrious career three decades ago alongside fellow Congolese icon Koffi Olomidé, is celebrated for his musical versatility. His extensive discography includes group collaborations with Talent Latent and Quartier Latin International, alongside eight successful solo albums.
The 48-year-old singer’s new title was announced on state television by a presidential spokesperson, who hailed him as a “worthy son of the nation” and acknowledged his significant contribution to promoting Congolese rumba and disseminating Congolese culture internationally.
Responding to the honour on social media, Ipupa shared a message of gratitude and inspiration with his fans. “This path has never been mine alone. It belongs to an entire people,” he stated, addressing the Congolese youth: “Your starting point does not define your destiny. Work, believe, persevere. The world is ready to hear your voice.”
This prestigious recognition arrives during a period of intense international activity for the artist. Recently, Ipupa made history as the first African artist to debut at number one on the French album charts with his latest release, “XX.” Furthermore, reports indicated he was the first francophone African artist to achieve two consecutive sell-out performances at Paris’s 80,000-capacity Stade de France.
His upcoming schedule includes a major UK performance at London’s O2 arena. The demanding promotional tour across Europe and the US recently led Ipupa to confide in Le Monde newspaper about vocal strain, necessitating a week of silence on doctor’s orders.
Ipupa’s career, while marked by global success, has also encountered profound challenges. Four years prior, a tragic crowd crush at one of his concerts in Kinshasa resulted in at least 11 fatalities. The concert had exceeded venue capacity by a third.
The artist has also navigated political complexities within the music industry. In an environment where piracy and touring issues can impact artist revenues, the practice of “libanga”—accepting payment to praise politicians, corporations, or influential figures in songs—is not uncommon. Ipupa himself disclosed to Trace FM in Kenya that he could earn approximately €10,000 per endorsement.
This aspect of his career has historically drawn criticism from some Congolese fans abroad, who previously protested his concerts, citing perceived allegiance to a government that faced significant criticism. However, Ipupa, who has also engaged in philanthropic work as a Unicef ambassador, emphasizes his commitment to fostering unity.
Upon receiving his knighthood, he articulated, “This distinction is more than personal. Above all, it celebrates Congolese music, our culture, our identity, this force that unites us and elevates us beyond borders.”
