Jersey’s Art Scene Confronts the Unseen: An Exhibition Reimagines Dementia’s Human Tapestry

A poignant photographic exhibition, “Reframing Dementia,” organized by Dementia Jersey and ArtHouse Jersey, is challenging societal perceptions of dementia by highlighting the continued joy and vitality experienced by individuals living with the condition and their families.

Challenging Perceptions Through Art

The exhibition captures candid moments of families sharing happy experiences, underscoring that a dementia diagnosis does not equate to the end of a fulfilling life. The organizers hope this nuanced portrayal will foster a deeper, more empathetic understanding of dementia within the wider community.

Vasco Pinto, one of the individuals featured, shared that the photographs demonstrate he remains “the same person” despite his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. A long-term resident of Jersey with a background in the hotel industry, Pinto expressed his initial surprise at the diagnosis, noting that his daily interactions with friends revealed no apparent change. He finds solace and happiness in his current life, supported by Dementia Jersey’s social groups, which he describes as a source of laughter and a surrogate family.

Embracing Life’s Moments

Mike Fearnley, who previously worked in the maritime industry, also found his dementia diagnosis unexpected. Initially frustrated, he came to terms with the reality, acknowledging that while the disease presents challenges, he feels fortunate to be alive and is focused on enjoying his remaining years. His daughter, Hannah Gleave, attested to the invaluable support provided by Dementia Jersey, describing the initial period after her father’s diagnosis as difficult but transformative. Engaging with the dementia community has forged new friendships and offered a sense of belonging, reinforcing the message that life continues with new experiences and joyful moments.

The exhibition showcases nine islanders engaging in various activities with their families, such as walking dogs and interacting with younger generations. Lady Karen Kyd, GP and Patron of Dementia Jersey, emphasized that a dementia diagnosis signifies a new chapter, not an end. She advocates for recognizing the individual beyond the diagnosis, asserting that a joyful life remains possible. Lady Kyd believes that by shifting our perspective and understanding dementia differently, we can significantly improve the lives of those affected.
