How EDM Powerhouse Chris Lake Reimagined Live Music With Brooklyn’s Biggest Blockbuster Event

When Chris Lake takes the stage, his performances transcend typical DJ sets, evolving into immersive journeys through his distinctive sonic universe – a realm characterized by polished production, cool aesthetics, infectious fun, and a touch of the unexpected. The artist’s productions are consistently forward-thinking, pushing creative boundaries while remaining firmly anchored to his established brand. Upon entering Lake’s atmospheric soundscapes, listeners are compelled to move to his irresistible rhythms. Soon, New York City will experience this firsthand.

New York Engagement

From today through Sunday, June 7, Chris Lake is set to headline three consecutive shows at Brooklyn’s Under the K Bridge Park. The initial demand for tickets for the Friday and Saturday performances necessitated the addition of a third show on Sunday. Notably, Lake’s final set of this weekend engagement at Under the K Bridge Park is scheduled for sunset, promising a unique experience that diverges from his usual late-night performances. Supporting acts across the three nights include Omnom, Stixx, Ayybo, Lumia, Tiga, Eli Escobar, and Ksenyeah, with a curated selection of artists performing each night. Tickets for these events are available for purchase.

“New York has proven to be an absolutely incredible market for me. The shows there are consistently great, enjoyable, memorable, and brimming with energy. It’s genuinely one of my favorite places to perform,” Lake expressed. He also indicated that he plans to debut a significant amount of new material during these sets.

Black Book Records: A Decade of Innovation

This weekend’s performances at Under the K Bridge Park are presented by Lake’s own imprint, Black Book Records, in collaboration with promoter The Bowery Presents. This year marks a significant milestone as the label celebrates its 10th anniversary. Despite its current status as a respected imprint, Black Book Records originated from an impromptu decision.

Lake recounted that prior to the label’s establishment, he was participating in a Skype call with acclaimed radio host Danny Howard, who was covering Annie Mac’s show on BBC Radio 1’s Dance Party at the time. Lake played Howard an unreleased track titled “Operator (Ring Ring).” This conversation took place on a Tuesday. The following day, Howard informed Lake that the track had been on his mind constantly and expressed his desire to make it the “hottest record in the world.” Howard intended to feature “Operator (Ring Ring)” on BBC Radio 1’s Dance Party that Friday, a mere two days later.

Recognizing the opportunity, Lake contacted his management. Although the track was not slated for immediate release, he proposed moving forward with it. Consequently, the label was founded, and its logo was designed concurrently. Thus, Black Book Records was established.

“It was a direct response to an opportunity that required us to get the record played on Radio 1, and it was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” the sound designer shared. “We began signing records from other artists, and now, a decade later, we’ve released music from numerous phenomenal artists. I believe we’ve made a substantial impact.”

Navigating the Future of House Music

Chris Lake has solidified his position as a leading figure in dance music, consistently championing the genre through his boundary-pushing productions. However, he approaches the future of house music, particularly concerning the influence of artificial intelligence, with cautious optimism. While acknowledging potential benefits, he voices concern that an over-reliance on AI-driven sampling might deter artists from developing original material.

“There must be a continuous influx of newness to propel the genre forward; otherwise, we risk stagnating in a cycle of repetition. Currently, we seem to be in a phase where much of what is produced feels recycled,” Lake stated. “For the long-term health of the music scene, I believe it’s crucial for individuals to keep striving to discover and create new ideas.”

His sustained prominence in dance music stems from his exceptional ability to craft innovative tracks that are unequivocally authentic to his artistic identity. “As an artist, it’s vital to identify what makes you unique,” he advised. “Everyone possesses their own distinct signature.”

“I believe it’s essential to remember that if you aim to stand out, attempting to conform is counterproductive,” Lake emphasized. “I focused on differentiating myself by pursuing my own creative path, independent of the need to fit in with others. Over the years, this approach has proven successful. While it wasn’t always the easiest route, it’s rewarding to look back and feel that I’ve stayed true to my own vision and principles.”

Business Style Takeaway: Chris Lake’s success underscores the value of artistic authenticity and proactive opportunity seizure in a competitive industry. His journey with Black Book Records highlights how organic growth, driven by artistic vision and strategic responsiveness, can build a lasting legacy over a decade.
