At a press conference on July 28, 2025, Sanders revealed that he was battling bladder cancer. He was diagnosed with a tumor during the offseason and had his bladder removed. His girlfriend, Karrueche Tran , reportedly supported him through the surgery.

During his recent press conference, Sanders urged everyone to “get checked” to rule out the possibility of cancer.

“Because if I hadn’t gotten tested for something else, they would have never found this,” he said. “Make sure you get the proper medical care because without these wonderful people, I wouldn’t be sitting here today because it was moving so fast. But please, get tested.”

To dispel rumors, Dr. Janet Kukreja of UC Health explained the time frame between Sanders’ diagnosis and surgery.

“We proceeded to remove the bladder tumor,” Kukreja said. “We removed the tumor. It was very high grade, growing into the bladder wall but not into the muscle layer. This is what we call high-risk, non-invasive bladder cancer.”

Dr. Kukreja confirmed at a press conference that Sanders is no longer cancer-free. “I am pleased to say that thanks to the surgery, he is completely cancer-free,” she said.

Bladder Cancer Symptoms: Signs to Look Out For

According to the American Cancer Society, one of the most common symptoms of bladder cancer is blood in the urine. Other symptoms include pain or burning when urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, a feeling of urgency to urinate, difficulty urinating, and having to get up frequently during the night.

According to ESPN, before doctors discovered the tumor in his bladder, Sanders also dealt with blood clots in his legs, had two toes amputated, and underwent surgery to remove persistent clots.
