The actress, producer, and writer contemplates the legacy of her late father, Quincy Jones, through a collection of songs that capture his joyful essence.

Following the passing of my father, Quincy Jones, a few months ago, I found myself in his closet holding one of his beloved Missoni sweaters. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a parent understands the sensation: the overwhelming sorrow of grasping an item that has lost its owner and, consequently, its significance. The sweater, once vibrant with his essence, now felt like a memento, a reminder of his absence. The shock of this realization swiftly transformed into an avalanche of grief.
I questioned whether listening to his music would evoke the same pain—or perhaps something greater. Yet, it has actually provided me with immense comfort. His music is not merely a static tribute. His music is a representation of him. It resonates with his strength and sensitivity, his humor, his creativity, his relationship with God, his meticulousness, his profound love for others, and his wisdom. It feels akin to spending time with him.
“His MUSIC is NOT some stagnant MEMORIAL. His music is HIM.”
Instead of attempting the impossible task of narrowing down a definitive playlist of a musical giant, I urge everyone to dive deeply into his extensive catalog. It’s vast, and it’s a treasure. Instead, I have opted to highlight songs that I believe capture the essence of the father I cherished the most.
The tracks in this playlist transport me back to a childhood enriched by the warmth of his community of remarkable musicians, the funkiest bass lines, the most energetic horn blasts, the richest arrangements, and the most soulful vocal harmonies: songs that embody the warmth, affection, and joy of growing up not with an icon or a legend but with the best father I could have ever imagined.
Listen to Jones’s playlist exclusively on Apple Music.
