“I was already immersed in emotions, but becoming a mother has amplified that significantly,” states Kali Uchis. “This experience as an artist enables you to explore deeper.”
The Colombian American singer, songwriter, and producer welcomed her first child, a son, in early 2024, a time that was also overshadowed by profound sorrow following the passing of her mother. “I was aware that I was about to become a mother while simultaneously facing the loss of my mom,” Uchis recalls, who acted as a caregiver for her mother. “It was an incredibly heavy period; I’m still mourning and processing everything.” The contrast of these events opened up new emotional and creative avenues for Uchis.
Building on the success of last year’s Orquídeas, an energetic Latin-pop album, her latest work, Sincerely, ventures into new territory with soulful and reflective tracks that delve into themes of motherhood, loss, love, and the significance of fully embracing life. “It’s the most intimate and exposed collection of music I’ve ever created,” Uchis remarks, having opted out of collaborations on this project and self-producing much of it. “The bulk of the album revolves around being a dreamer, a lover, a griever, and an overthinker, yet it simultaneously serves as a reminder to relish a life of happiness despite the world and your situations. Cherish the small moments and savor daily life.”
“ROMANTICIZE the LITTLE THINGS and ENJOY everyday LIFE.”
In August, Uchis will embark on a tour accompanied by her son and partner, rapper Don Toliver. “Our son loves exploring the world and enjoys music; during my last tour, he was still in my belly,” the artist shares. “I’m looking forward to him experiencing my performance. Presenting this album will feel so different than before. I believe I will connect with it on a much deeper level.”
To ready herself both physically and mentally for her upcoming tour, Uchis has been enjoying a selection of cheerful, nostalgic, high-energy tracks, which she has shared for Bazaar’s summer 2025 “discover” issue. The first song, Magazine 60’s synth-pop hit “Pancho Villa (Star de Cantina),” sets the vibe with its Spanish and French lyrics about a night out. “My dad owns clubs in Colombia, where he hails from, and he would always play that tune,” Uchis explains. “It brings back memories for me. This entire playlist evokes thoughts of my mom’s old workout tapes.”
